No Home of their Own - An article in Today (a free tabloid)

Just read in Today about this young unwed mum and her 8 month old baby.. who had tried to purchase a flat but was rejected bcoz she and her child are not considered a "family Unit".

And when she tried to rent a one-plus-one room flat from the government, this is what she gets

"We wish to explain that the Government's public housing policy is aimed at promoting family formation through marriages.

To discourage unmarried parenthood, a single unmarried mother is therefore not eligible to rent an HDB flat with the child born out of wedlock.

As you are not officially married to your child's father, it is regretted that HDB is unable to accede to your request to rent a flat with your child who was born out of wedlock."

Why must single mothers be punished in such a manner.. Yes, they were wrong in the first place (having unprotected sex and getting pregnant). But she did the right thing by not aborting this baby and has shown great determination and responsibility in bringing up this baby.

Look at what happen to the young undergrad girl from Toa Payoh, she threw her pre-mature baby down the rubbish chute cos she's afraid to face the consequences.

Raising a family is difficult enough.
But it's even more difficult for single parents struggling to make ends meet.
They don't need more obstacles.
They need more opportunities.
So don't make it more difficult for this brave young mother, can somebody please help her.....
